She has worked with translations since 1980, both in-house and as a freelancer. She has also been the president of the American Translators Association and keeps giving back to the industry. She is specializing in financial translations and is giving us tips on how to break into the financial market as a translation specialization, but also presenting her “non-marketing” strategy for her translation services.

Marian S. Greenfield

Marian S. Greenfield is a past president of the American Translators Association (2005 to 2007) and the New York Circle of Translators. Marian has also served as a long-time Board Member of ATA and as Treasurer of the NYCT. Currently, she is President of AFTI (ATA’s foundation arm) and chair of ATA’s Professional Development Committee, having chaired several other ATA committees over the year, including the Ethics Committee. Having worked in the translation industry for 35 years, Marian is the owner of msgreenfield Translations, a translation industry consultant, Trados instructor, and freelance Spanish, Portuguese, and French into English financial and legal translator. Having translated in New York’s Financial District for 20 years, Marian is the former manager of translation at JP Morgan. She has taught translation and the business of translation at the University of Chicago, New York University, and the University of Puerto Rico.

    As an English-Italian financia translator for more than 20 years, I listened to your podcast with great interest. I totally agree that specialisation is the key, and financial translators must keep up to date with the news.My experience is a bit different from yours (e.g. have 99% direct clients) I also agree that few financial translators give presentations (I gave my first one a couple of weeks ago :-). I would like to have the chance to meet more financial translators like me and share comments. I appreciated your view very much. Thank you!!! Francesca

      Thank you Francesca! I highly recommend attending the ATA Conference to meet more translators with your specialization, but Marian might have even better tips.

      Hi Francesca. There are some excellent financial translation conferences in Europe and Latin America. Check with the various national translation associations.

      I organized a few here in the U.S., but haven’t done so in several years. We do have quite a few financial translators at the ATA annual conference.
