06/15/2015Episode 55: The invisible toolkit for translators – Interview with Andrew Morris
Every translator needs a basic box of tools in order to survive, from expertise in writing to knowledge of their source and target languages, besides all the materials, kit and strategies that make our daily work possible. Without these, any career is going to have difficulty taking off. But they will only take you so far. If we want to go further, to thrive in our career as freelance translators, we also need “invisible tools” or “invisible toolkit”, i.e. mindset, attitudes and value. In this episode I am interviewing Andrew Morris about these invisible tools and ways to develop them to achieve our dream career.
In this episode we cover the following:
- What the invisible toolkit is
- What beliefs we need to cultivate to succeed
- What emotions we should cultivate to thrive and be happy
- How to cultivate these beliefs and emotions
- The holistic translator webinar series

This episode provides valuable tips and insights on what we should focus on when it comes to our mindset and attitude towards our business, clients and colleagues. What is the status of your invisible toolkit? I think these tools are something to constantly work on, and if we do, we will be much happier in our professions and lives.
Andrew Morris is a freelance translator, reviser, writer, editor of the clearing digital magazine and musician (pretty much in that order) as well as being the host of the Standing Out forum on Facebook. He began translating 6 years ago and, besides the cut and thrust of the daily linguistic challenge, he is particularly interested in what makes thriving translators succeed. His approach suggests that it takes far more than knowledge and skills, and is unafraid to look words like philosophy, ‘attitude’ and ’emotional intelligence’ squarely in the eye.
