05/29/2016Episode 93: A new rates calculator for translators- Interview with Dennis Brown
Today I am joined by Dennis Brown. Originally a freelance Spanish-English translator, he now runs his own company, Pacific International Translations, based in New Zealand. We discuss his new translation rates calculator, and think through what we need to take into account when calculating our rates, including the costs of self-employment.
Important things covered in this episode:
- Dennis’s new rates calculator
- How to ensure a sustainable income
- The calculations we should make
- Setting a target income
- Potential mistakes
- Additional costs we might overlook

Thank you to Dennis for sharing this with us. I have just given a webinar on pricing strategies for freelance translators where I talked about another great calculator, CalPro, so I look forward to trying Dennis’s; perhaps his will make it into my next presentation! Let’s all try it out. Have a wonderful week.
Dennis Brown started translating Spanish to English way back when work was delivered on floppy disk, translators spent thousands on technical dictionaries, and the fax was the centre of the office. Over the years (gulp, decades!) his freelance translation services steadily morphed into a translation company offering an increasing range of languages and services. He is owner and Managing Director of Pacific International Translations based in Auckland, New Zealand. An avid “tramper”, in his spare time Dennis loves nothing better than “going bush” on multi-day adventures in New Zealand’s remote forest and alpine areas.
A special thanks to Catherine Metcalfe for editing the show notes.

Thank you Dennis and Tess, very useful indeed. However unfortunately the calculator doesn’t open up. I tried in IE, Chrome and Mozilla, but there is no way. In Chrome it says “pitl.pactrans.co.nz took too long to respond”. I’m based in the UK (if that could be the reason why?? Too far away??!:).
Hi Aude, Thank you for the comment. I will reach out to Dennis to see what happened. Feel free to contact him directly too.
It is working again now – an issue with changes on our server apparently.
Thanks for letting us know, and sorry for the inconvenience.
I hope you find it useful Aude.
Regards,
Dennis
