Episode 238: How Freelancers Can Plan for Retirement – Interview with Jennifer Harter

This episode was recorded before the pandemic changed the world and I want to keep providing you with marketing and business tips. I also want to go back to normal content, since many of you might be inundated with, or tired of, hearing about the Covid-19 by now. If you’re subscribed to my newsletter, you will also get useful tips and resources on how to handle this pandemic, how to market right now and much more.

In this episode we talk about retirement. During my short time as a full-time employee, my company took care of saving for the retirement, but after I started as a freelancer, it was years and years before I even began thinking of saving for retirement. It was hard. I did not have a regular income, some months I earned a lot, and some months not. How could I possibly save for retirement then?

I invited Jennifer Harter a financial educator to talk about saving for retirement and investing in general.

Important things mentioned in this episode:

  • First steps and a roadmap to save for retirement
  • How to save when you have an irregular income
  • Alternatives to retirement savings accounts
  • Real Estate as retirement investment

Useful links mentioned in this episode:

Any time is a good time to start investing in your long-term financial security, but the sooner you start saving for retirement, the better. I know this sounds like a dream for beginning translators that are struggling to earn enough every month, but as soon as you can, start putting away a little bit every month for retirement.

Jennifer Harter

Jennifer A Harter is a Financial Educator with a BS/MBA in Accounting and a background primarily in the not-for-profit and small business sectors. After seeing firsthand the true cost of financial stress on both the employee and employer, she decided to provide individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to become financially empowered so they can make better fiscal choices, break free from the stress and uncertainty of living paycheck-to-paycheck, become debt-free, have hope for the future, and maybe even become financially free. She uses her 30+ years of experience, including her own experience as a young single mother who found herself $30,000 in debt after her divorce with a $12,000 annual salary, to help people achieve their dreams and goals without sacrificing their current happiness.

Are there transcripts of the podcasts? I *hate* listening to anything but music, i.e. I just do not like listening to the spoken word (I actually decline to visit museums where they hand you earphones). I would much rather read what is being said. If there are transcripts, where would I find them?

    • Tess Whitty says:

      Hi Ulrike,
Yes, there are transcripts. You can find them in the show notes. Please let me know if you can’t find them.
