Episode 222: Where to Find Translation Work for Beginning Translators

This episode is the second one in a series geared towards newer or aspiring freelance linguists. In this one I give you tips on where to look for translation work. This hurdle can feel like a “needle in a haystack” situation, but the truth is there are plenty of places to find new jobs!

I have made a list of these resources with links and names to make it easier for you. You can down-load it here:

Important Tips mentioned in this episode:

  • Translation Platforms & Job Boards
    • Many new translators get their first job from an online translation portal
  • Translation Agencies
    • Fantastic for gaining traction and exposure
    • Become a trusted resource and you’ll never have to go looking for clients ever again
    • Beware of scams; not all agencies are legitimate or ethical
  • National Translation Associations
    • When joining a national translators association, your information will be listed in a data-base commonly used by translation buyers
    • Builds visibility and credibility
  • Join LinkedIn Groups
    • The largest social network for professionals, join groups to further your career with mean-ingful and lucrative connections
  • General Freelancer Websites
    • Fuel your portfolio and let the clients come to you
    • Great learning tool: amass experience to decide how to structure your services and rates
    • Average rates aren’t the best, and competition is fierce
    • Pro Tip: Make these websites work for you, don’t get stuck in the race to the lowest rates; get in, gain experience and reviews, and get out
  • Your Personal Network & Former Employers
    • Don’t be afraid to market yourself, tell everyone what you’re doing – you never know who could have a job for you

Closing Remarks

When you’re just starting out, it’s all a numbers game – how many agencies can you get in touch with, how many projects can you apply to, how many contacts can you get in touch with. Eventual-ly, you’ll be at a place where you’re fully booked or even turning down projects because you’re just too overloaded with work. Best of luck!

P.S. Keep your eyes open for a free webinar coming up in just a few weeks where I will discuss The 5 Essential Investments to Starting and Growing a Freelance Translation Business.
