Episode 171: New Areas of Specialization for Translators for Added Value – Interview with Vasso Pouli

Are you ever concerned that all this new technology will make us jobless in the future? If so, you’re not alone. The standard solution is to specialize in a field or language pair. However, there are other ways to increase your value as a translator and make sure you will not become obsolete. In this episode I am interviewing the CEO of a translation company’s branch in Greece. She gave a presentation during ELIA together in Greece with a new twist on specialization.

Important things mentioned in this episode:

  • How we can add value with new tasks in IT and localization, such as pre-processing
  • How to increase our specialization and value in marketing, with brand services and DTP
  • How to better make use of the tools we already have, for productivity and as value added service
  • How to become more proactive, instead of reactive

Useful links mentioned in this episode:

The answer to the question, will we be out of a job soon, is definitely no. There are many ways we can offer value added services to our clients, apart from industry field and language pair. The more we go niche, the easier it is to become more proactive and set our own rules for our business. What about you? Are you using any special value-added tasks for your clients? Please share in the comments below.

Following the completion of the internship programme, she remained at Commit going through the positions of translator, reviewer, Project Manager and Operations Manager undertaking different tasks and responsibilities along the way, while at the same time doing an MA degree in Specialized Translation and completing a course in Conference Interpreting.
