Episode 269: Secrets of Six Figure Translators – Interview with Oana Maria Sofronov

I know several translators who have consistently had a six-figure annual income (in dollars, pounds, or euros) for several years, myself included, except for 2020. In this episode, I discuss strategies to achieve this.

I recently stumbled upon a new book on the market, called “Secrets of Six-Figure Translators,” In this episode, I interview the author of this book. Oana Maria Sofronov is a sworn English to Romanian translator and interpreter, mentor, and successful entrepreneur based in the UK. Her book is full of practical tips and worksheets to help other translators.

Important things discussed in this episode:

  • The biggest differentiators between freelance translators that make six figures and those who don’t
  • The importance of developing a business/success mindset and tips to do so
  • The six major areas of specializations for translators and steps to choose one
  • Tips and strategies to find good translation agencies
  • Tips and strategies to find direct clients
  • How to use the 80/20 principles on your services

Useful links mentioned in this episode:

Persistently marketing your services to the right client, at the right price, with the right mindset will make us successful and bring us to the six-figure mark. This sounds so easy, but it is true if we follow the exercises in Oana’s book, we are certainly well on our way to do just that.

Here’s my favorite quote from the book:
“When you research a translation company, you should not only check whether they are looking for freelancers within your specialization and language combination, but also whether you would like to work with them.

You should think of this process as you recruiting the translation agency, not the other way around. You are the one deciding who you would like to work with, why, and whether a particular translation company is a good fit.”

This one is from Weaversway from Great Britain. He said:

“It is lovely to discover that Tess Whitty has taken up her podcasts, marketing tips for translators with a series of new episodes. This follows a summer of delightful repeats of previous sessions. I have significantly benefitted from sessions on what agencies want from translators, how to use your website, and (much earlier) on your unique selling point

Tess picks up the thread in episode 255 in an interview was the Italian translator Martina Russo on how to use LinkedIn. Both Tess and Martina use LinkedIn extensively and draw on long experience. As with so much teaching in any subject, many of the remarks appear evident on the surface, but do all of us act on them? I know I fail often and need the encouragement of knowing that even successful professionals (e.g.) LinkedIn daily. Already in the past, I have thought, “if Tess Whitty (or any other professional) has to do this, then I should most certainly be doing the same!

Thank you so much, Tess, for your time and dedication. Your accomplishments are amazing!”
